Undistracted

By L. Stewart Marsden

You and I will one day walk a millennium or two.

We’ll start at daybreak on the shore, as the sun newly boils out of the sea.

We will stroll, quite casually, and talk appropriate and inappropriately;

of how we viewed each and all, asking “what did you think?” and “how did you feel?”

then listen to each answer, consider and turn it about,

without responding with a sigh, or a nod.

The sun will stretch its arms as we meander to the west,

sometimes locked in dialogue;

sometimes cool with silence;

but, always side-by-side —

our shadows long before us, then shortened to a nub,

then stretching to keep up

as we climb the foothills and cross the range,

then slowly crawl across the plain

until we reach the shore again.

Adieu, you say.

Adieu, say I.

We part to find some other who

will walk with us a millennium or two.
