Sitting Arthur Out

by L. Stewart Marsden

Close to fifty family members and some guests are huddled in four beachfront cottages at Holden Beach, NC as Hurricane Arthur winds its way up the east coast headed for the outer banks north of us.

Holden is one of many beaches along a stretch of coast that actually faces south and east — the crescent shape at the NC/SC border — just north of Myrtle Beach. Myrtle is the drawing card for younger kids, as well as bikers from all over the nation in May.

So, I’ll be posting updates on my FB page: search for Skip Marsden.

While we’re not worried as the storm is a Category I presently, we will be hit by the eye wall sometime this afternoon.

We’ve all the fixings for margaritas, and will dine on fillet mignon, chicken wings, shrimp and crab legs later.

Our opinion? With a name like Arthur, how bad could it be?

Follow up: Arthur passed during the night after dumping 2 to 3 inches of rain, and some gusting winds that did little damage. I watched from my bedroom as distant lightening that was occasionally spectacular lit up the northeast sky on its way towards the outer banks.

Beyond midnight the skies cleared, and I was able to see the Milky Way with clarity.

This morning? Calm sea and winds, cloudless sky and sunshine.
