The calm before

by L. Stewart Marsden

Black-hooded Bonaparte
winging windward toward the
early morning sun,
eyeing morsels among the sand,
belly begging for relief;
calm, sane waves, sent from sources afar;
breaking finally, foaming slowly, easily
up the shore,
speaking quietly, minor murmurs,
lulling languid sleepers back to peaceful dreams;
all the while the gathering storm
pieces together well beyond horizon’s line
biding its penultimate moment
of change and chaos.
