The eddy

The eddy

by L. Stewart Marsden

The cracked, curled brown leaf
swims atop deceitful currents
that seem slow and only meandering,
and basks awhile in its scenic sail,
carried along to unknown ports.

The eddy, unforeseen and waiting,
turning, spins slowly at its outer edge,
then faster, more chaotic to a siphoned end.

The cracked, curled brown leaf,
happy in its unawareness,
gently pulled by th’ eddy’s edge,
circles wide and slowly in,
upends and disappears.
