Sun, setting

by L. Stewart Marsden

Against the dark-rimmed cutting edge of undistinguished mountains
painted in the day’s last rays of light
— deep greens and hues of grays —
at the onerous coming of night,
the blood-red sun sets out of round —
oblong and striated,
outdated by the day’s long length,
withering, while all around
the sky blasts its final throes of glowing golds and reds,
oranges and purples,
muted blues,
fading by the moment,
the cold night crouching close to touch
the earth’s skin and blanket all in deep dark.

Thus the end of another stalwart beginning,
and the hopeful, dark wait for that break of new dawn.
