The Finch

The Finch

by L. Stewart Marsden

The black and gold finch clenches
a roost of the seed-filled feeder,
sunning his rich-colored wings in the warmth
of the new day’s sun just begun a few hours before,
then pecks and pries a prized nugget,
and, apprised by his mate’s chittered call
withdraws with quick airy flight to share his
meaty morsel with the mother of his heirs.

I’ve just found you – and all I can meaningfully say is I wish I’d discovered your work before.
