Semper Fi

Semper Fi
by L. Stewart Marsden

Always true
Me and you
There is nothing we can’t do,
As we shoulder our future along.

Straight ahead
Glad or dread
To the vic’try or we’re dead
As we shoulder our future along.

And it’s “Hey-O-Hi”
We’re always Semper Fi
No matter how hard our life might be!
And it’s all day long
We’ll sing our simple song
As we shoulder our future along!

You and me
We will see
We were truly meant to be
As we shoulder our future along.

Thick or thin
We will win
All the battles we begin
As we shoulder our future along

And it’s “Hey-O-Hi!”
We’re mostly Semper Fi,
Though sometimes we stumble and we fall!
And it’s all day long
We’ll try to right the wrong
As we shoulder our future along.

What the hell
‘Tis not so well
And we’re mired in the dell
As we carry our burden along.

Thing’s aren’t bright
So we might
Think of giving up the fight
As we carry our burden along.

And it’s “Hey-Oh, Why”
Do we mumble, “Semper Fi?”
Whoever expected things so wrong?
And it’s “My-Oh-My”
To hell with Semper Fi
As we drop both the burden and song.

Day Fifteen of The National Poetry Month’s challenge to write a poem a day. My apologies to the USMC, about whom this poem is not.
