My writing by Genre

— L. Stewart Marsden

The art of writing has been a life-long endeavor. Crafting something that communicates how I feel or think is both a joy and a frustration. Oftentimes the joy is immediate — as the expressive flow acts in a cathartic way — often merely to vent, and on rarer occasions, to heal. The frustration most often occurs later, on reviewing what I have written, and discovering how inept I am in describing or expressing something.

Oh, and there is fear attached to sharing my writing. That fear happens when whatever I have created is handed over to someone else to read and give me a response. It is the “what do you think”- moment. Everyone has experienced that feeling, whether getting feedback on a new hairdo or clothing purchase or a prepared meal. It is the moment of truth that gives us validation for our effort, or not. It is a moment of extreme vulnerability.

This blog is my first attempt at putting myself out there for review. Not me, actually — but my creative thoughts, responses and productions. I invite your input, and appreciate the time you give to react to my work. Those works are represented in the following genres. I do not claim to be master of any, but a student of each. As I go along, I will add titles to each category and a link to that work.

PS: My work is pretty much posted from oldest to the most recent creation.

  • Adult novel (meaning novels for adults, not pornographic)
  • The Woodberry Chronicles

  • Young adult novel

    You have written so much…wow!

Not really. I’m having difficulty with the longer pieces — such as “The Huguenots,” which I’m starting ALL OVER!!! There are a lot of poems because of The National Poetry Month challenge to write a poem a day. That was very difficult, as I do not consider myself a poet (like I say, my feet are too short!). But I feel a sense of accomplishment as a result. And, maybe there’s one or two poems of worth, too.

I try to write when something gets my interest. I watched an animation adaption of Peter and the Wolf last week, http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0zVh06vTYdo, and wrote Petya i volk (fiction) as a result. Here’s an excersize for you: sit on your front porch in the early morning and listen. Write a poem about what you hear. I’d like to read that.

OK I’ll see if I can, but it might take me a while..I find poetry difficult. Are you a perfectionist with your work?
